Bantam Vs. Standard

any pros or cons on this subject? Im unsure of whether i should get standard or bantam but all of you guys seem to have standards. Any sugestions?

Standards usually lay larger eggs. They also do not fly as well, sometimes not at all. Bantams escape quite well due to their flying abilities unless you have a covered pen. I just like my Girls LARGE, I guess, although several of my accidental crossbreeds had a standard Cochin/Silkie father and took after the Silkie part in their size and the size of their eggs.

I like the big girls too! And the big eggs of course. The bantums are cute eye candy though.

And as far as chickens go I like the standards too.

Should White meat vs. Dark meat be in another catagory??​

Depends why you keep chickens. If eggs, go standard. I like hen/chicks running around, rooster crowing, eggs are not that important to me. For me, the chickens are a hobby only, so I go w/bantams. Bantams don't eat much, lay good in spring/summer, can have a lot in small area. Depending on breed if they fly at all. My wyandottes don't fly and are extemely calm, as were the cochins I use to keep.

I like my little banty girls, but worry about them too much. I am very slowly turning my flock from bantam to standard size for a couple or reasons. Mostly because 1 DH wants larger eggs (gotta accomadate the one who buys the feed

) 2. Hawks come around often, and I let my flock free range. 3 all my bantys seem to be broody 60% of the time LOL Maybe its just the breeds I pick, but thats seem to be my luck LOL. Good luck in your chook shopping!

I have an all banty flock and LOVE them. They are super cute, free range well, and always stay close to home. Due to a hatching egg mixup I had some Buff Orp's for a little while that were standard, and they did a number on the landscaping. DH was so upset when one of his Hostas got eaten to the ground in a couple of hours by the standards. We were really happy when we were able to rehome them. It's bantam only at my house.

Why not have both. Bantams can coexist with the standards. Believe me bantams are alot tougher than they look. They can free range with the best. The one thing they have above the big birds are they can fly really well. They are usually pretty fast and can get away from the bigger birds. The mille fleurs are very beautiful and I have noticed with age their coloring has grown even more beautiful. The hens are just as lovely as any roo. They are comical, lay eggs(only smaller) and are broody. Freebies mille feurs hatched three barred rock chicks. It is so funny cause at 8 or 10 weeks they are just as big as their foster bantam moms! I wonder if these barred rock chicks will have the personalty of their breed or their foster moms the bantams. Heaven help us if they have the personalty of the bantams ha ha.
