Bantams Hatch Early

I’m not surprised she died this morning but I’m surprised that I am so utterly pissed about it. On a positive note. I came home to a new Buff Orpington that hatched all on his own on the correct side of the egg.

How many of the eggs might have been pointy end up? Sometimes this happens.

It probably was. She was hatching from the pointy end. If you read the previous post you will see that the turner didn’t get turned off until she started piping. She never got a chance to settle properly. Oh well. I have recently started calculating survival rate to be 44%. There are 6 eggs in the incubator. She was going to die and there will be one or two more deaths. I’m just disappointed in myself for being disappointed if that makes sense. If a person dealing with chickens more than 2 years hasn’t learned that baby chicks die like crazy then they have been insanely lucky or they aren’t keeping track.

The moral of this entire story is that bantam eggs hatch in 18 or 19 days instead of the traditional 21 days.

The rest of my eggs are buff Orpingtons. I guess I let myself get upset because she was the only one of her kind that I had. In the grand scheme of things this is no big deal and was anticipated as the most likely outcome anyways.
