Are bantams the chicken equivalent of those hyperactive miniature poodles? Or they just act like cute chickens? We’re thinking of getting some but the skittishness of our two Leghorns is about all the ‘hyper’ I’m able to handle!

I think leghorns are pretty much known for being flighty, but some do have different experiences with them. I have lots of bantams in my flock that are the calmest ones of the flock actually. We have a mille fleur girl who is awesome, she will come find you everytime you are outside. Our silkies are really calm too. Seramas same for them very curious and brave. It all depends on which bantams you are looking at getting. Any ideas of what you want?

I have a few EE bantams and when i got in the pen with them, i better have on my farm clothes because they climb all over me. All want to sit on my arm/shoulder. Very sweet. I'd like a Buff Orpington bantam.

Thanx for the input. It's wonderful to hear that they are friendly (I assume it's different from bird to bird, just like w/ standards).

No, don’t know what we want. I had shied away from the idea b/c I didn’t want small eggs…until our pullets gave us those adorable pullet eggs. :)Are banty eggs the size of pullet eggs?

I like the idea of heritage breeds, ones that are rare and need to be encouraged. I like frizzles b/c they look so cool. Something crested? Something w/ feathered feet?

I have some Silkies and they're pretty laid back. They haven't started laying yet, and they won't run to greet me the way my Dominiques do, but I find them a friendly and stable breed. You would probably like them.

No they are pint size just like the banty's. I've read where it takes roughly two to equal the size and if you're using them for measurements, you definitely need two for each egg that is called for.

We currently have a flock of Banties which is made up of EE's, Mottled Cochins, Blue Silkies (now in their own coop/run), Silver Sebrights, Black-Tailed Buff Japanese and 1 Silver Spangled Hamburg (considered a light breed).

They all turned 17 weeks old yesterday and they are all rather mellow. Granted, the boys are coming into their own and acting up on occassion...boys being boys, nothing more. They all have their own individual personalities, some friendlier than others...who are major "curious cats".

Our SSH was our "rare" chick from McMurrays. We like him so well that we are planning our flock around him. Hamburgs are a dual-purpose light breed (smaller than Standard, bigger than Bantam and good for meat & eggs). He's supposed to be flighty but he follows me around the run when I'm in there and is the last man standing to make sure all of the girls are up on the roost before it gets dark.

Our Bantams

Good luck and keep us updated on your decision!

Beautiful birds Dawn! Now are those EE's? The reason I ask is they have tails. Just beautiful though, I absolutely love the colors. You've done right by them for sure!

Edited because I read your post again. Your album said Aracauna, that's why I asked. Never mind....just kick me in the tush for good measure.
