I was quite confident that my little Belgian bantam was a pullet, especially because she hatched with one other chick who developed a very red and larger comb a few weeks ago and has since been rehomed. By comparison, the little grey one was also so much meeker and took ages to be brave enough to eat from my hand.

Well here she is at 12 and a half weeks...except today, I thought maybe I heard 'her' try to crow! So is my little pullet really a cockerel? I have no experience of his comb type. This breed don't get wattles so I can't go by that. No sign of any sickle feathers or pointy hackles yet.

I think that I see male specific feathering starting in the hackles and saddle. Maybe it's just my old eyes.

Dang. I'll be listening out for any more possible crowing attempts then. She just seems so girlish...these sneaky cockerels are good at hiding sometimes.

x2 on the side standing pic. looks male look at the elongated hackle and saddle feathers sure there rounded but there longer and slender, still rounded yes but there to slender to be female.

Here are some more pics (she/he is wearing a diaper while I investigate):

It's going to take a while longer for this one. I see no pointed male feathers but the comb is more red than I would think for a female of that age.

At the moment, hard to be definitive. A better side view would help. This breed can be slower to show itself, especially in some of the less conventional color varieties, it seems to me.

My original D'anvers are almost 7 years old, but I had porcelains in males only back then. These were hatched April 6 and here, it is June, one last pic in July, so between 10 and 12 weeks in these photos. The Mille fleur D'Anvers had larger combs than the porcelain males, but by that time, all were very red. You can see obvious pointy saddle feathers on these boys.

And the girls, same age (milles only, though) to compare combs.
