g'day i have four chickens two astralorps and two isa browns. one of my australorps has a seriously bald bare bum! and it is bright red. it has been like this for a few months and is not getting any better, first we thought it was just malting, but the others are not getting anything like it. can anyone help or have any ideas?

Welcome from Oregon new member. I use "Bag Balm" on most every bald spot or wound for my chickens, the local feed store's sell it to heal cow, goat, etc. udders; works well on chapped human hands also. Have also seen it available at some pharmacies on the shelf (comes in a tin). The chickens don't like to peck at it in case the feathers are being plucked, mites & lice don't like hanging around on skin that has it on, & skin rashes often heal comfortably with it. You're right, molting isn't usually in spots only. Best wishes for her speedy recovery.

You can also get it at Wal-mart. It's generally cheaper there. They also sell "Udder Cream" which is very similar and works well, too. What would we do without Wal-mart? (being snide here!
