We are new to chickens, and we just acquired some 1 year old layers from a local farmer who is downsizing. I have this sweet RIR and they were all living in a small tractor, and came to us stinky and some with bare buttoms.
This one particular RIR has a really bare bottom that is all covered in nasty poo, and her back fathers are drenched because every time she goes to the bathroom it just literally drips down.
I am attaching a picture....sorry not pretty. Hopefully someone can help. I moved her inside to the chicken hospital. Gave her yogurt both yesterday and today. (Not plain as I did not have any, but some strawberry greek yogurt). I had the heat lamp on her, and then read if they are too hot they may have diarrhea.
The real question is if anything is wrong or I just need to hunker down and give her a good scrubbing. I thought I would even put espom salt in the water to help her heal.
Any help is very much appreciated!
