Bare patches

A number of my hens are missing a patch of feathers in the middle of their backs. I assumed it was the roosters getting a little ruff when they put their love on them but maybe they are getting pooped on at night when on the lower roost. Is this a common issue?

If it's right in the middle of the back it's most likely mating damage, but yes pecking could become an issue especially if any exposed skin becomes irritated and red... You can use blue kote on thier backs, or i resorted to chicken aprons (rooster saddles), our if there's no pecking issue yet just remove the rooster to another pen so the girls can heal. I have 13 girls and only 3 of mine have significant feather damage but hers a pic on one with the apron
