barefoot in the coop

Ringworm is a fungus.... Not a parasite. Yes fungal infections generally happen externally on the skin and can be passed by contact. Athlete's foot is a very similar fungus to ringworm. Internal parasites nearly always require ingestion or other access into the body. The skin is our barrier against most internal infections or infestations.

Dont get me wrong. I love the idea of going bare foot. And I am a big believer in letting kids and myself good and dirty when we get a chance. And I dont use the anti bact soap ether. I just dont want to come across as one of those crazy anti germ people. They annoy the heck out of me.

I was also a little questioning when the dock said the cause was the coop we have. But I love nature and all the fascinating thing that happen in it. And I wouldn't put it past nature for something like that to happen. I know for a fact there are parasites that can enter the body threw the skin and you would never know it. Heck I saw a show that said that 75% of the earths population has a parasite of some kind.

Well point is that there is no harm done. And I whear shose in the coop.

I read in the paper last week that about 1000 different types of bacteria have "colonized" the human body. In fact, mice bred to be unable to host bacteria on or in their bodies were not able to digest well.

That said... I wear shoes in my back yard. Between slugs & chicken dookie, I've stepped on enough squishy things out there to learn my lesson.

Amen. It's called immunity. Until you are exposed to some things, you can't build up a defense against them. Common sense + getting nice and dirty every now and then=good and healthy! (Plus it's a lot of fun!!!)

Sadly i have to wear shoes now because of arthritis in my feet, but not long ago by this time of year I had feet as tough as leather. But I still wore shoes into the chicken run cuz that's just gross.
