Apparently it is normal for chickens to both molt and go through an eggless month in the Fall. This is the first year I had no eggs for about a month, but I butcher my layers every year, and was waiting for my June pullets to start, so I had 4 dozen in the fridge. Still, it seemed like the one older hen that I kept shouldn't have stopped completely. After almost one month she started laying and the older pullets did, too. I tt someone at Thanksgiving who buys organic eggs and she said that their store's chickens often "go on strike" in November and then resume laying.
Right now I have 5 layers and about 13 pullets hatched on September 1, 2013 who won't lay until February. Yesterday I got 5 eggs, but the norm will be 2-3 egg/day for several months.
It's just annoying bc I JUST found someone who wants eggs in exchange for feed!!
