I let everyone out of the coop this afternoon and when the mommas came to beg treats from me i got a BIG whiff of rotten eggs

Well, it was pretty obvious which girl it was, Lilly. She had about 30 eggs when she started setting and i didn't realize it til part way into incubation, I took all the bad eggs i could find and put some in the incubator(still in there). well i figured there would be more too, she's just not big enough for 30+ eggs!!

after i figured out it was her i went to the coop to check her (closed in)nest box and had to pull about 5 VERY rotten eggs & left the rest that still looked good, but, of course they all smelled nasty now

I have had rotten eggs in the bator before but that's more open(spacious) than a duck nest. anyone know if the rotten eggs could harm the good eggs in the nest?? I hope she has some good ones still but she did ALOT of shuffling with the eggs before i realized there was so many

I have been pretty lucky over recent years not to have an explosion...But a boyfriend of mine a few years ago was helping in the garden and poked his shovel straight into one.. And kept working away... I couldnt stand it....

How much gunk was left in the nest??? they may have coped a bit of it... But as long as they werent drenched and sitting in it for a while they should be ok.

i no that the rottten smell off a bad egg will some times kill the good eggs had this happen with some in the incubator awhile back there where good till the egg expoded then after a few days i notice some had went bad. but some of them still hatched although the hatch rate was smaller then normal.

Luckily there was only 1 egg that was just leaking. none had exploded until i threw them into the compost pile(thankfully!!!). but it still smelled pretty yucky in there. the house didn't stink as bad after i got them out.

it's so weird...
i have a chicken & a duck that constantly swap nests and they Never have bad eggs! but 1 girl ends up with a whole bunch. my poor, pretty, stinky, lilly girl

I've had a bad experience picking up the infertile duck eggs around the lake when I was younger. Picked up a bad egg, and it exploded all over me as soon as I touched it....BLECH!
