Barn into open air coop conversion

Work on the run has restarted! Yay!!!

DH has helped me over the holiday weekend to do some more work on the run. He even took time away from deer hunting to help get it finished.

It's kinda hard to see, but this is the top of the run covered in hardware cloth. It wasn't as bad putting it up as we thought, but it did take most of the day to do it. We had thought about putting tin over the whole roof. We decided against it since the roof line would have had to drop down a lot more. I didn't want to have to be bent over while in the run, so we went with mostly wire.

Here, we are attaching the 2' apron. We screwed it to the 2x4's, then flipped them over and screwed them into the posts.

You can just make out the 2"x3" green squares of the wire. We had thought about using hardware cloth, but figured it would rust quicker since it's not as thick. Putting the apron down was easier than I thought it would be.

We anchored the apron wire down with metal tent stakes. I will be putting a raised garden bed over some of the apron, and will let the grass grow up through the rest of it.

Here it shows the apron installed. I painted the bottom boards this afternoon, but it was too late to take a pic. I had planned on painting them before we used them, but I didn't have time to paint all the wood we got Wed. evening. The rest of the boards are painted now, so no more bending over to paint!

We're hoping to put up the wire tomorrow, and then just have the door and pop door left to do. Off to figure out the easiest way to make a slid down pop door. I'm not going automatic, since I have to go out every morning and scrape the poop board any way.

It's finished!.... well, almost! LOL

The run is complete. I just need to add some outside roosts for the chickens to play on. I also need to start putting up my raised garden beds along the parameter of the run.

I wish we had gotten it finished earlier in the season. Then the hens would have access to more of the green grass. It is still a bit green, but there won't be any when spring gets here. I hope to start putting some leaves in this weekend to start their deep litter in the run. Should help with bugs/worms for them to dig for.

I need to do a bit of work on the door still. It drags just a bit along the bottom.

Brave little chickens they are not!! It took them a full 20 min before they decided to come out!

My smallest hen, Buffy (the one who has never laid yet) is the first out. Of course, she has to look first to the left, then to the right to make sure nothing is out there. She would be good for crossing the road!

All it takes is one brave soul....

then the rest will follow! Of course, it seems like the best findings are right up against the coop instead of out in the middle! Silly girls!!!

I thought I had a close up of my pop door, but I don't. I used a cutting board from Walmart, and hung it guillotine style. Nothing fancy, just tied a rope to it, threaded through a couple of eye hooks with a clip on the end to clip it open. I need to rig up something to "lock" it at night, just for my peace of mind. I'll try and get some pics of it today and post them later.

Thanks for following along. There will be a few more updates, roosts, gardens and such. I even have a couple of ideas for another coop build. One is never enough!

Merry Christmas everyone!

I guess nothing is ever really finished is it?

I have embarked on a new mission. I plan on turning my whole barn into 6 chicken coops. I have started a new thread with the build, so those who would like to follow can click the link below. It won't be a fast build, since I will be doing most of the work alone. DH will help me on the really hard stuff, but this is something I would like to do myself, at least what I can.
