I have 2 chicks about 2 weeks old. This is my first time with Barnavelders and can't wait till they get older. I hope I have at least 1 female out of the 2. Although I would prefer 2 hens I think a rooster would be ok.

Anyone have any suggestions about the breed. What age can you tell if you have male or female.

Thank you.... and Chicken on.

I really like barnevelder. They are quieter than many breeds and don't wander as far. The birds are gorgeous. I lost my rooster last fall so I ordered another for this spring. They aren't the best layers, but they do often go broody and are good moms.

I have 3 that are 4 weeks old. One splash, one silver lace and on gold. I still can't tell pullet from cockerel, which is normal for most large fowl breeds. I am however, keeping an eye on one who's comb is getting a bit pink now.

Generally the boys will start getting a pink comb between 6-8 weeks. Than they will start to feather out darker on the neck and chest at around 2-3 months.
