Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

:hugs I'm so sorry you lost your chicks.....if it's an open barn a lot of things can get them....snakes, rats(they usually leave a mess though), owls, etc. etc. etc.  But, it still sucks when you loose the babies!  I hope all the others grow up okay and you don't loose anymore.
My pens are fully enclosed. It's just the fence that separates the two pens was big enough for them to get through the other side. I had thought I had wired it together buy I guess I didn't. And that's the part that stinks because there was absolutely no trace of them. Oh well, things happen for a reason!

Hi everyone - thanks for all of the encouragement. Based on what you said, the Barnie hatch wasn't too bad then. I got about 40% - would have been 50% except one died while trying to get out of the shell. For the silkies, I only got about 22% - not good, but I think I know what went wrong. I heard that they drown much more easily if the humidity is raised too soon or too high during lockdown. I suspect I raised it a bit early (17.5 days - with silkies 18.5 to 19 is recommended) and a bit too high as well. I won't try to hatch them together again.

BTW, I do have a splash Barnie in the bunch. If the white chest is a still a good determination of gender, then it's a boy - and I may have only one pullet. That would be sad, but I'd keep the girl and the splash I think.

So, how do I start to determine which of the "too many roosters" to cull. I was planning to keep only the two blues, but if type is the most important factor then maybe I should pick the best blue and the best black? Problem is I don't have a good "comparison" picture to determine what I'm looking for in type. The text descriptions in the standard just don't work for my brain like a picture would.

If I post pictures of the five roosters and three hens from Greenfire, would you guys give me honest evaluations on type and color? Can you tell much at this age? They are about 10 weeks old now.

Thanks!
Shanna

Hi all,

A friend of mine who is not a BYC member got these Barnies at a chicken swap. What do you think of them? He is going to get some of my Barnies but is trying to decide if he should use these as well. I think they look pretty good for Barnies of unknown origin. I would probably advise not to use them just because of fear of the unknown, but I'm interested to hear what you think of them? The hen in the picture by herself is the daughter of the couple.

Thanks,

Donna
