Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

I wanted to make sure I'd actually HAVE Barnevelders before I introduced myself, but seeing that there are 5 bouncing around in the incubator, I think it's safe now...

I bought eggs from TLS Ranch, and I am so excited to join your ranks. I have to say that I love the tone of this thread, and how everyone works together so harmoniously. (Not so true with some of my other breeds...) I'm so excited to add Barnies to my flock!

Welcome! Trisha's babies are GREAT! You will love them. Yes, I think you could even try to start a fight and it will just fizzle, lots of level headed nice educated people here. I love reading this thread.

I just pinned the "Sexing Barnevelders 101" page, and then went out to check my freshly hatched babies... there's a splash in there! SO excited!

Congrats on our new babies!!!!!!

I just wanted to stop in & say hello, I've been lurking for awhile, but haven't posted. I just acquired a trio of blue laced Barnevelders recently that are still young yet, probably about 2 months old now or so & then got an extra rooster for a backup also. I'm new to this breed, so I have a lot to learn about them. So far they seem like a very calm breed & kind of shy.

I'm excited I just got my first Barnie last weekend. Believed to be a pullet but still not sure. Either way going to be beautiful double laced bird. Hope to add a few more of these birds to my flock:D.

Moved my last Barnevelder eggs to the hatcher tonight. I set 20 eggs from TLS with only two not fertile. I didn't have as good of luck with the other mailed eggs (I had really high hopes for them unfortunately), with 10 out of 18 not fertile. I will post pics in the next few days as the hatch finishes up.

I have scoured the US for some of the best Barnevelder genetics, and I really believe that between all the birds I have acquired that there should be some awesome genetic material to work with (and a lot to cull). There are likely only a few more places that I would possibly like to get stock from before I would call my Barnies truely diverse. It seems like most of the good to great flocks around the country have their basis in the same genetic pool. I am not old school however and I find what people like Trisha and Andy have done with their lines quite refreshing. If you asked me my honest opinion, I would say that US birds are on par with Euro birds and if I was brutally honest I would say that some of the US birds have surpassed many of the Euro lines.

The whole point of this for me has been to establish one of the best representations of Barnevelder genetics in the country that I could manage. Yes, I have been called obsessed before, but I am a firm believer in going all in (this has been more costly than I would have liked or bargained for). I also believe that if you are going to feed an animal, you might as well feed the best representation of that animal you can reasonably get your hands on.

I look forward to learning and sharing as we go along.
