Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

Have you done any showing yet I encourage all of us to show I would love to get these back in the spotlight. Showing and getting our birds out there can do wonders for the growth and popularity of the bred.

Not yet, I have two small kids and there are not many shows near me. There was one APA local that was held for the first time, but I have to clip all my birds wings. We went on vacation and I couldn't have birds escaping while we were gone. My kids are almost old enough for 4-h, maybe they will show at fairs.

From my understanding they do in fact need to be yellow but not the bright yellow more of a creamier yellow with the red scaling on the back of the leg's in the cocks.

The APA Standard calls for "yellow". ...that is all it says.

Yes, yellow legs is the standard. But, as with most yellow legged birds, the bright yellow color is usually more desierable for show. Some barnie lines tend to have very pale, near white leg color. Many of us have been working to improve leg color to be more yellow. My blues do have Wyandotte blood, but by this fall I will be working on the 6 th and 7 th generation.

Sometimes feed can be used to make the yellow more intense.

Thanks guys I have heard of how feeding excessive amounts of corn can make the legs yellow . Not sure if that is true but I guess it makes sense thanks for your input Trisha and Walt.

I'm not familiar with the corn theory (interesting), but marigold added to feed does amazing things to leg color yellows and eggs. Egg yolks can become an almost surreal orange/yellow. I didn't come up with it, the feed I buy has it added and you can really tell the difference when you feed another brand that doesn't have the additive.

Kale is really good to feed because it is very high in two carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin. Corn, carrots, marigolds ect also help improve leg and egg color. Feed high in soy can also cause paler legs.
