Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

Sorry about your loss Meg it stinks. I lost 4 Black Orps before I could get a handle on it, I used Sulmet in the water to save the rest it seemed to have worked. I think all the heat has made the Cocci worse.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the info! The chicks you saw that you think were sick... or they they little ones or the one big one I have? The one that died was extremely puffed up when I picked her up from the breeder. I think I'm going to try to return them. I'm not going to ask for my money back but these BV's have been a huge problem from the very beginning.

Any suggestions for my chick with the eye condition?

Thanks again!

I live in Virginia...in the mountainous area in the west.

I actually have found a breeder about 3 hours away and I am going to go pick up some pullets in 2 weeks!!!
Very excited.
I haven't seen their chickens, though, so I am nervous. I just hope they are decent quality and HEALTHY.

Phew! 107 today and it's just 4 pm.!! I've sprayed the runs so the chicks can walk on wet earth. I've wet down the roofs and walls. What else? Any ideas? So far they are still alive, but panting.

Frozen or cold treats like watermelons, veggies, and food scraps. You can freeze bits of fruit and veggies in small tubs with added water....it's like chicken ice cream:) Water misters help a lot, but keep them away from bedding and food to prevent mold issues.

I gave my chicks a huge frozen cucumber that had grown too large/seedy to eat. Some were happily sitting on it and some were eating it.

Hi Meg
Sorry about your chicks being sick. In the pics you posted I saw two sick looking chicks. When one of my birds puff out like that and become lethargic it is usually coccidiosis. This occasionally happens when I am switching from medicated starter to non-medicated grower and the birds do not have resistance. If you just got them they may have been coming from a situation like a crowded brooder or grower pen where cocci can grow like crazy.

At the first sign of this condidion I go back to medicated starter and dose the water with Corid for the five day treatment. This usually clears up before the five days. Look for bloody feces. Chicks should not be puffed out like that and they should be active. These are two clues to look for.

Andy
They have never had medicated feed. Could that be the problem?

Congratulations! Excited for you!

My remaining 7 week old chick is still doing fine. My 10 week old is fine too.. Minus the eye problem that won't go away! Still treating with Vetericyn.
I just picked up three Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock pullets today. Woohoo!
