Hiya everyone,

My 4yr old daughter is patiently awaiting our new flock to mature so that she can get some baby chickies, but I have no idea how chicken genetics works and its all so confusing, we have 2x blk australorps girls(hopefully, one in question until it lays or crows), 1 x wht leghorn girl and one isa girl and a little blk australorp x unkown has brown lacing in feathers. Our Roo is a barnevelder, pretty sure he is a golden laced or chestnut? Not 100% on his colour yet. Will attach pics of our flock for ref, and amy help would be awesome. We've only ever had isa girls and now gone a different direction as my daughter wants to hatch chickies and i thought crossing docile breeds would make great egg layers as well dual purpose birds but allow my daughter to learn about life cycles ect.....

So long as you have the space for them and a plan for any possibility unwanted/unneeded chickens, such as extra cockerels, have fun. Chickens can be sooo much fun, and caring for them is a good way to teach kids responsibility.

We live on a farm so plenty of space ect....and she will prob sell the chickies to earn pocket money and pay for their feed. Im all about responsibilty here she love helping me feed water and put them away at night. Mucking out the pen is a whole different ball game though yet lol

Our boy hei hei

Are you sure that he’s a Barnevelder? He doesn’t really look like any of the pictures? I might be wrong. He’s really pretty though.
He's a pure bred barnevelder from a breeder direct. Hes only about 14-16weeks old and the barnies are very late bloomers

Does anyone know what sort of chickies may come out of these pairings please? And any pics ect????

The Barnevelder Australorp cross will create a pretty big and docile bird, I believe they will most likely be black with some hints o the father's coloration. Of the breeds you have, I only have experience with australorp hens crossing with colorful roosters and usually they hatch chicks that are predominately black with a little bit of color. Usually hackles and tailfeathers. Sometimes they retain the full black coloration. Or in the case of when we had an ameracauna rooster breed an australorp hen, the resulting chick was black with a straw colored saddle, hackles and tail he was a fancy boi. This was a while ago. Back in 2003. Out of curiosity did one of your australorps turn out to become a Roo?
