Howdy All, well a few months ago we picked up a Barnevelder chick.. (supposedly a pullet) well we just couldn't figure out why "she" was getting so big.. well now at 19 weeks.. I was looking at Barnevelder photos.. and well... Betty is now Barney...lol He is in the lanky awkward stage and bigger than any of our other birds.. and we have all kinds... Australorps, RIR, EE's, Plymouth Rocks, etc. I have a 20 week old Copper Maran X Australorp roo that was hatched somehow and we thought was a hen.. that is crowing and running the hens.. but this Barney one is very skittish and afraid of everything.. no crowing yet..... Just wondering if the Barnevelder Roo's are slow to mature like the Hens...

We also have a 12 week old Wellsummer roo we got to replace our old roo who died... and now we have 3.. lol. One may have to go... 17 girls isn't enough for 3.

THanks for any info

Honestly, if you have enough space and polite males, 17 could be fine for 3. I think I have between 9 and 15 females and 3 males right now. Granted the 3rd is still young (I think he hatched in may?), but so far no one's squabbling or over breeding.

And in my experience, males and females either mature fast, or slow in a breed. Usually you won't have fast maturing females and slow maturing males

Thank you... I figured he was just slow like the hens are.... My wife has found a way to make 3 roosters work.... just apply Chicken math.. and Viola... no issue.. we should be moving to 21 hens and 3 roosters... with about 1/3 acre to range on.
