Barnevelders/White Rocks good for beginners?

I am wanting to get 3 Barnevelders and 3 White Rocks for my first chickens. Good choice?

Also if I want to butcher them in a couple years, should I distance myself from them emotionally (i.e. not name them, play with them, etc.)
