Barnyard mix?

Just mixed breeds. Someone got some birds from a hatchery or a feed store or wherever, maybe they were pure at the start but then they started to breed them together and mix. Barnyard mixes could be a mix of almost any other breeds. They could have came from pure breeds or they could have came from other mixes, you will never know.

just hatched some eggs I bought on eBay. They were listed as barnyard mix.

Now, I’m wondering … what exactly is the definition of a barnyard mix? Does it mean mixed breeds or a mix of purebred breeds?

Like many things there is not a true definition. it can mean about anything, just that they are not claiming them to be a breed.

All breeds were developed from "chickens". Breed is a manmade thing, chickens existed before mankind developed breeds from them. It's possible that specific barnyard mix is descended from some of those original chickens and were never breeds. It's possible someone got different breeds and let them mix. It's possible they are some kind of combination between those. Basically they are just chickens.

You can contact them and ask what they know about the chickens' ancestry, they may know something or they may not.

Thanks everyone! I did contact the breeder, and she basically carries quite a few breeds of pullets (which she gave me the list) but only Maran roosters. If I get a maran chick, (which I'm pretty sure the maran egg was one that didn't end up being viable) the maran would be pure breed - but the others are mixes.

We just hatched 5 super cute Maran-mixes

What cuties! I think barnyard mixes AKA mutts are some of the cutest! Our EE girls are some of my favorites and they are basically just mutts too.
