I've been reading what I can find and what I have time for about the sex linked barring gene. I know the basics but I thought I'd rack the brains of those who know far more than I to see if you can come to a different conclusion.
My one and only roo right now is barred but I don't really know what to make of his coloring. He is definitely barred on his body and tail but his neck and saddle feathers and some of his wing feathers are kind of barred but a different pattern and a creamish coloring instead of whitish/silverish (lost yet? sorry
)
He's a good boy, not particularily stunning in the personality department but does his jobs well. I've considered sending him to freezer camp though because I don't want a bunch of little barred chicks running around. How's that for prejudiced
What I know of his parents:
Mom: presumably barred rock.
Dad: from a backyard chicken owner that raised bantams and full sized chickens together and somehow ended up with a menagerie of 3/4 size chickens. Dad had silkie for sure in his background (five toes, feathered legs and black skin) as well as a plethera of other breeds, even she wasn't sure. Dad had some barring on his neck and saddle feathers (sorry no picture!) Same deal as what my current roo has-creamish feather base with almost chevron like barring on them. Dad had blackish/green tail feathers and black body and wings. Very nicely colored.
Anywho here are the questions: Based on the photos (or perhaps you don't even need the photos in this case?!) could anyone tell me what you would call this boy's coloring? This pictures are of my current roo. Can you tell from his coloring if he is going to throw only barred chicks? It may be an impossible question to answer but it was worth a try! Hope you could keep up with me.
