Barred Rock chick question

I was kinda suspiscous since his barring wasn't as uniform as the hens... the lady I got him from said she had a BR and a Cuckoo.. she was probably wrong on both..

The only other thing he could be is a cross between a Cuckoo Marans and a BR-the legs are yellow like a BR, but the barring is very erratic, more cuckoo actually. In any case, he's not the pure BR you thought he was.

If anyone knows, it's Cyn. She was right on my two babies and now that they are getting feathers, the boys are very crisp barring and the girls more muted.

I'm actually ok with it now and just putting them in the mixed flock.. not all that enthusiastic about the BRs anyway. The older hens are big bullies and they are going to a swap next spring.

I am confused now, my Barred Rock chicks both have dark legs. And I read somewhere that the dark line on the legs when they are small chicks was a way to tell if they are male or female.

That leg color is not completely reliable as a sexing tool for chicks. There are varying amts of dark. They all have some usually, but most pullets have much darker leg fronts, at least in hatchery stock. Someone told me none of theirs had black leg fronts at all, but that was show stock, I think.
