Barred Rock Cockerel, Zane...Updates

Not sure how swollen the leg is. We haven't been able to get Zane out of the kennel till a little while ago. I thought when I was carrying him over to his pen that it seemed slightly less swollen, though. I'll be able to check it over better when we give him his shot today.

My fingers are crossed in hope that today will be better for Good ole Zane.

This a.m., the swelling in the leg is completely gone. The cut is still draining and we got a very small piece of solid infection to pop out. His body seems to be ridding itself of the poisons still. Still no gripping action in the toes on that foot, which worries me. It's like the foot has absolutely no feeling in it, but that may return when the infection is cleared up. He's on his fourth day of antibiotics today, second round. I need this to end soon. He's worth the effort, though.

Good job Cyn. I am wondering if you could make up a bandage dipped in epson salts and then wrapped around the wound then covered with a bandage or plastic for half an hour or so? I imagine you are beyond ready for this to end. I do hope you had a Happy Fourth and I wish that for all our BYC friends.

Carrie, we have done something like that, put some salt in the sulfa cream to draw infection out and it must have worked then, but obviously we can't leave that on the wound. My main concern is that he doesn't move the toes on that foot. It's stays flat, no gripping from the claws at all. I dont know if he'll get feeling back in his foot and if not, he cannot mate, I dont think.

Still keeping my fingers crossed for that boy Cyn! I'm happy to read that the swelling is gone. Now if he can just get some use of that foot. Fingers crossed!

When I went in that little pen he stays in sometimes, Gypsy ran in behind me. Zane got up on his feet to dance for her and she squatted, but I felt so bad that that was the end of it. He can't breed the hens and I'm not sure he ever can. Still, time is the great healer, so a bit more time, he gets.

Great progress! Most especially that he wants to do the things he would do if he were totally healed. A brave and resilient boy. Your TLC is giving him a comfort zone within which to heal.
