Hi everyone, as I write this (9:05 p.m.) I have a 4 week old Barred Rock pullet sitting on my head, refusing to go "nighty night". My 4 month old Silkie "Pei Pei" goes to bed promptly at sunset and even sleeps in until 9 a.m. if she feels like it. She goes into her dog kennel / bedroom, and tucks herself in to blankets and stays put until morning. Why then is the baby fighting sleep? Every night it's the same thing: PEEP! PEEP! PEEP! walking around franticly peeping and running after me...
Folks, I have literally laid down in bed cooing to this chick just to get her to settle down and go to sleep! I do not want to establish a weird "rock the chicken to sleep" routine every night...
These are indoor pets, (outdoor during the day, indoor at night) and while I am totally flattered that Bernice is comforted by "mama" at bed time, I wonder what the cause of this is, and if she will grow out of it... When my son was a toddler, I refused to let him get started sharing my bed, so I'd put him in his crib with a binky, teddy bear and soft music... Does this chicken want a binky and bear?
Seriously, what's going on? Anyone have a clue?
P.S. - DH who was originally opposed to having chickens said tonight : "she can sleep in here with me!" - he's in bed watching a movie ---

Aren't they sweet?! If it were not for my DH who adamently stomps his foot and says nooooo chickens in the house (outside of chicks in the brooder), I'd be in this same predicament.

I do have an almost 16 week old cockeral that is very imprinted on me, but he lives outside in the coop with his other 9 siblings. My DH thinks I'm nuts for all the affection that I shower on this little guy. If it weren't for the DH, guess who'd be sleeping on his pillow.....

Bernice was a room mate / replacement for Pei Pei's boyfriend that had to relocate due to his crowing. I live in close proximity to neighbors, and this is a teeny tiny project that I took on, just for the fun of it. I grew up with chickens, so it's natural for me to have them... what is unnatural about it is not being able to have a decent sized flock! (sigh, one day...)
Pei Pei is aloof. I make her sit on my lap so I can comb her "hair" and once she's there, she remembers she likes it... so Bernice's clingy behavior is great! The girls go out during the day and both run to me when I call, but Bernice sticks around and sits on my head or shoulders purring to me.
SHH! UPDATE - I firmly re-placed Bernice in the "nest" beside Pei Pei, and literally RAN out of the room... She's finally quiet! Yayyy everyone! My baby settled down! Thank you Mahonri for the advice... unfortunately, I really can't push it too much by getting another... I know you're right though.

I've only got one who sleeps in the house - the runty rooster. He's usually good about going to bed, he sleeps in a cat carrier so he won't crow and wake up the whole neighborhood.

Funny, for the first time since he started sleeping inside, he gave me problems going to bed as well. Kept jumping back onto my head rather than going into the carrier like he normally does. Guess they just get restless sometimes.

Edit: I just had to send my silkie rooster and his girlfriend away today, because of the crowing. Oddball I can justify keeping inside at night, but the silkie is an outside chicken so he got to go to a farm where he can crow to his hearts content.
