Hi everyone, as I write this (9:05 p.m.) I have a 4 week old Barred Rock pullet sitting on my head, refusing to go "nighty night". My 4 month old Silkie "Pei Pei" goes to bed promptly at sunset and even sleeps in until 9 a.m. if she feels like it. She goes into her dog kennel / bedroom, and tucks herself in to blankets and stays put until morning. Why then is the baby fighting sleep? Every night it's the same thing: PEEP! PEEP! PEEP! walking around franticly peeping and running after me...
Folks, I have literally laid down in bed cooing to this chick just to get her to settle down and go to sleep! I do not want to establish a weird "rock the chicken to sleep" routine every night...
These are indoor pets, (outdoor during the day, indoor at night) and while I am totally flattered that Bernice is comforted by "mama" at bed time, I wonder what the cause of this is, and if she will grow out of it... When my son was a toddler, I refused to let him get started sharing my bed, so I'd put him in his crib with a binky, teddy bear and soft music... Does this chicken want a binky and bear?
Seriously, what's going on? Anyone have a clue?
P.S. - DH who was originally opposed to having chickens said tonight : "she can sleep in here with me!" - he's in bed watching a movie ---
