Barred Rock hen or rooster??

@PyxisThanks so much for you response! So bummed. This is our 3rd go around with a barred rock and it's a cockerel

Just curious, what does it mean for a cockerel to be double barred? I'm new to the whole chicken thing!

You're welcome and sorry, that sucks!

Double barring means he has two copies of the barred gene. Barring is sex linked in chickens, so it is only passed to birds on the Z chromosome. In birds, the male is ZZ and the female is ZW in terms of chromosomes. So the male can get two copies of the gene, thus making him double barred and lighter than females, who can only ever have one copy as they only have one Z chromosome.

We got 25 hatchery straight run barred rock chicks in August. It was pretty clear within weeks the pullets from the cockerels. The cockerels are lighter and more clearly black and white. The cockerels are like little zebras. They are prettier than the pullets!!! the pullets are darker and the barring is less clear so they are darker .

Thanks for your response. So you agree with everyone else, mine is a cockerel?

Thanks everyone for your replies, even though it wasn't what I wanted to hear haha

We do have a good home lined up for him, thank goodness. We are just waiting for him to start crowing. I'm prolonging the goodbye! I think I'm still in the denial stage.
