We are new to chickens and bought a few from a friend. He bought an assorted group and they are in the 16-17 week age group. One of barred rocks has a larger comb already but seems to be missing some of the other features? We were discussing this tonight and I only have some random pictures. I can try to get better ones tomorrow. I have no idea if the one with the comb is the same age or older than the other with no comb. Our concern is that it could be a rooster but after looking at pictures it seem as though some hens just have a larger comb? Any input would be appreciated.

Yep, that's a cockerel. Everyone else looks female.

I agree, that's a cockerel. But not just because of the large comb, his legs also appear to be extremely thick, which is a classic male trait, he is quite a bit larger, and, most telling, female Barred Rocks tend to have double barring so to speak and therefore are darker whereas the males just have single barring and have more white on them. That certainly appears to be the case with your birds, the male appears lighter and the female appears quite a bit darker than him. Sorry but that's a young rooster :/ his tail feathers may take a while to come in

Thanks for the input. I will have to exchange him for another breed as those were the only two rocks.

No problem! And sorry you have to get rid of him but hopefully you can get another nice pullet :) is your friend willing to take him back and trade him?

He is willing to trade. He has another Rhode Island and sever buff orpington hens of about the same age. Guess I have to decide which one would work best for us.
