Barred Rock..hen or rooster

thank you again jetdog! Pretty exiting to have chickens again, now that I don't have a rooster it's even better!

thank you as well Shmccarthy...what's up with the spurs then?  anyone know?

I've heard of hens having spurs, it's fairly common. Especially on just one leg. All chickens will have small "spur nubs" and most hens don't progress further than that. If she does have spurs, she is probably older. Roosters don't get bigger spurs until they are about a year old.

Makes sense, thank you so much. One side is kind of large, and I was thinking she was older too. It was tricky though cause she's not real big for a barred rock and the rooters she was with were clearly young. I'm not very good at this but I'm pretty sure I'm right about that. No big deal though, happy to take care of the gal in her old age if that is what it is.

Personally, I think she's an older hen, maybe going through a molt. The pale comb indicates she's not laying right now, and the presence of spurs tells me she's not a young pullet, most likely. The missing tail feathers could be molting. Combine this with the time of year it's popular to cull hens that aren't going to lay through the winter, and my guess is she's at least 18 months old--that's when the first hard molt hits and hens usually take a break for the winter.

Great insight! thank you very much! I hope I get a change to learn so much about chickens, I think I like them as much as I like my horses!
