Barred Rock Hen x Blue Ameraucana Roo

So if the rooster doesn’t look barred but carries the barred gene, is a barred pullet possible?
Yes. However, having barring without showing barring isn't possible unless your rooster's white, or a similar pale colour. Barring is very dominant.

Some chick colors don't show head spots well, mind you. So if you want sexlinks, you probably shouldn't be breeding really pale or oddly patterned chicks.

Sexlinked genes: Hen carries one copy, rooster carries two of any sexlinked gene.

Chromosomes are packaged DNA, or genes. Hens have one W, one Z (WZ) sex chromosome, and roosters have two Z sex chromosomes (ZZ.) Z is longer than W and holds more genes.

Barring is one of the genes on the Z chromosome. It's not on the W chromosome,

Hens, therefore, have only one copy of barring (only one Z.) When she passes her W onto offspring, it makes pullets, and they don't have barring because they can't inherit it on the W chromosome. The pullets can only have barring if the rooster's Z chromosome has the gene for barring.

Make sense?

6 Girls

So if I’m understanding this right then of my 13 chicks, 7 appear to be boys bc the white spot and 6 appear to be girls bc no spot right?

So the head spot trick definitely worked bc I ended up with 6 hens ! Here are pics of them today they are pretty much full grown just not laying yet! I love the blues ones it’s exactly what I was hoping for with this cross!
