I have a genetics question for those who are experts here. I have a young cockerel (23 weeks old) who is out of one of the black hens in the photo (minus the one with red leakage) and possibly by a Barred Rock, Black Sex Link, or Cockoo Marans. My guess he's from the Barred Rock because he inherited strong barring, whereas there was only a 50/50 chance with either of the other two.. What say you?

I’m honestly not sure, but those are some gorgeous birds!

So he's from a black hen and either a cuckoo marans, barred plymouth rock, or BSL father? My vote is barred rock. He can't be from a cuckoo marans because of his yellow legs. What color legs did the BSL have?
BSL had the same leg coloring he does.

Don't mind the featherless ladies. Their previous 'hubby' was a tad rough on them, not to mention twice their size and weight. They will recover, and like Bruce. Those hens are actually, this is going to be fun to explain Black Silkie x (Black Astrolorp x Svort Hona). When I got them the breeder would only identify the BS and BA, and said the third breed was a 'mystery' because he didn't want to give his secret away... but, Conformation, combs, etc do not lie.

Ah okay. I wouldn't rule out BSL then. Either BSL or BR father. Can't be the marans.
So with a 50/50 chance of passing along the barred gene, this one hit the jackpot? The BSL was much larger than he is at the same age. And he has more of the conformation of my BR guy.. But we are down to two then.

And the nice young lady with red leakage is from the Cockoo out of a Black Sex Link hen. She's now larger than her momma at 23 weeks of age.

Just as likely as him not getting it. It's like flipping a coin. You are just as likely to get heads as you are to get tails.

He could definitely be from the plymouth rock.
