since you got a mixed batch you just got some really bad luck, but most hatcheries have a 90% pullet to roo ratio when you buy 10 pullets so yes and no, you got different breeds so you could have just had bad luck in getting the 10 percent on the barred. production reds are hybrids meaning they have multiple breeds in their lineage because of that not every bodies comb will grow at the same rate, I had a RIR that had a huge comb at 8 weeks after that it no longer grew and pinked up at laying age and she was the first to lay, she still has the same size comb as when she was 8weeks oddities happen. the EE will still be questionable until it's comb grows and pinks up or it stays the same and stays light, another way to figure out the comb a little early is if there are 3 rows of bumps on the pea comb it will likely be a male if there is only one row of bumps on the pea comb then it is likely female.
