Barred Rock Pullets?!?

They are about 4 to 5 weeks old. The bigger one seems to have the bigger comb. Which throws me off because supposedly the roo's grow slower.
Any opinions?

I've also heard that the pullets are darker?

Where did your get the chicks? This can make a difference. True bred Barred Rocks are dead easy to sex, as yes, the cockerels will sport wide, bright barring on somewhat a charcoal black feathering while the pullets remain darker and display "spotty" white bars. The cockerel's are first to display brighter red combs and sprout little red wattles below their beak at six weeks. The pullets' combs will remain tan-yellow and no wattles.

Got them at a feed store. It's harder for me to judge these, they look just alike color-wise..

I'm hoping they are pullets... None act "Roo-ish"
But I highly doubt they are 100% breeder quality barred rock

They appear to be pullets, based on the dark coloration and dense head spot. A roo would be lighter and have a more diffuse spot.

P.S. -- in my experience the way the barred rocks "act" and the leg wash are the least reliable indicators of gender. The overall dark vs. light coloration is the big difference.

I'm thinking you have two pullets.

I would say they are both pullets. I have 2 of them too. Sometimes hens have larger combs; some are even larger than males. I hope this helps but I am sure they are pullets.

They seem to be the fastest growin birds I've had yet...
