These are my next door neighbor's chicks and are supposed to be Barred Rock pullets. However, we're noticing that they have brown or partridge colored feathers coming in (they are a month old). Does anyone know what breed they could be if not Barred Rock? Sorry for the pic, but I had to take it from above.

Thanks!

If they were black with white head spots as chicks, they may be black sex link pullets. Many of the big box stores are great at misidentifying chicks.

Sourland just mis-spoke, that's all.

Actually, the female black sex link has no head spot, the males do. In any case, the chicks shown are not Barred Rocks. Sourland's suggestion that they may well be some kind of mix is likely. BSL is but one of these often sold these days.

Fred's, yeah the older they get and the way their feathers are coming in that color, we didn't think they were Barred Rocks either. In any case, she just hopes at this point that they lay good, are docile and get along with her other Barred Rocks.
