Barred Rock Roo?

That's crazy! The tail does look rooster-ish. That's great though.

I do like the Barred Rocks. Well, from my one example of one anyways. Kind of surprised me. She was so skittish as a young dinosaur till lay. How about you? What breeds do you have?

I have 12 full grown birds: a barred rock, a few orpingtons, an easter egger, a silver laced wyandotte, a speckled sussex, a black star and a couple red stars. I like to try different breeds each time I get chicks. So far I like the barred rock and the easter egger the best for eggs. All my easter eggers have been very skittish, but I love their egg color and the one I have is a great layer. My barred rock lady is pretty mellow and lays eggs straight through the winter. The silver laced is the prettiest and has the softest feathers. She's my most docile bird, too.

This spring I bought 8 new chicks: a barred rock, 3 easter eggers, 2 black jersey giants and 2 light brahmas. It gets pretty cold in the winter here at 10,000 feet elevation, so the bigger birds are better. I've never had giants or brahmas before. My brahma babies are super mellow and don't mind being picked up at all. So far I really like them. I happened upon your post because I was trying to figure out if my new barred rock is a boy or a girl. They are 6 weeks today and so far I think I have all girls! Yay! I usually end up with one rooster.

In Hawaii do the chicks come from the mainland? Or are there hatcheries there? or individual breeders?

Wow, you have quite the flock! What state do you live? Must be awesome to be able to have plenty chickens. We are allowed 4 per household but I have 8 layers and 3 chicks. We have two houses on our lot and my son lives next door on another property. Kekaha is the wild west of Kauai so too many chickens is the least of this towns problems lol. Plus we have feral chickens EVERYWHERE on Kauai.
I think most or all of the feed stores the chicks come from the mainland. I've bought locally too. My Light Brahma is local along with one of my Orps (the chatty one). Locally they are not sexed. I mention my lt. Brahma- you are going to Love your Brahmas. They are so pretty and sweet. Mine keeps going broody... but she is the sweetest thing. I have an Americanna who is a good layer. I think one day I may try Wyandotte but i will have to research them better to see if they can tolerate our heat. My big girls struggle.

Yep. It was late and avatar is a fairly new word to me . Glad you got it. Too funny . Only time I got a face close to that is when I let someone put molasses in feed like a dummy. To be there for photo is classic.
