Barred Rock Roo?

You've all been asking about the comb...so here it is

. We got all our girls from a breeder a couple hours away. He said this one was a Barred rock, but who knows? It really dosen't matter too much though, because im just a small backyard chicken keeper.

...of all the chickens i've seen, he's got one of the scariest eyes

Well, this is one for the books. That comb is so tiny, much smaller than any BR cockerel of 11 weeks I've ever seen, but the younster has definite saddle feathers. Is it the same size as the others the same age? The reason I asked is because I've seen a BR dwarf cockerel who was small, with tiny, undeveloped comb, but very obvious saddle feathers. If it wasn't for those saddle feathers, everything else says pullet, but NO pullet has a pointy, shiny fringe of saddle feathers.

Can you get a picture of that bird standing alone or beside others the same age? I'm curious now!

Here's some more pics

. He's the only BR i've got so, no one to compare him too. That would be so awesome if this suspected roo turned out to be a pullet...Althought the odds are stacked pretty high

Can't tell, is there a grey streak down the front of the leg or is it solid yellow? All my female BR's have a grey streak down the fronts of their legs and the roo's are solid yellow. My last hatch had 3 roo's, 2 had combs like this almost til they started to crow but the bodies were much heavier.

I just got my BR pullets (10) at a livestock auction. That text made me run to the coop to check mine out. Yep, they all have grey stripes.

The "stripe" you're referring to is the dark wash of color down the leg fronts of most hatchery type BR pullets. Some breeder line pullets do not have that, and some males may have a small amount of it, so that is not the best trait to go by.

What is interesting is that the bird in question has white legs, not yellow at all. Will be fun to see how he develops and what he grows into.

I have two ladies that I thought were pure bred when I bought them, but after I read more on BR's, I determined they can't be full bred because one has a rose comb (possibly Dominique cross), and the other has little feathers running down her legs, but not nearly as obvious as Brahma or Cochin. They still lay daily and they are my roo's favorite ladies, so they're here to stay!
