BARRED ROCK :: ROOSTER OR HEN? HELP!

The Thicker leggs also indicate hes probably a Roo .. AS long as you collect your eggs often you will never have to worry about the fact that the Eggs are fertlized It takes pretty nice conditions to have them develope.. And an occasional blood spot doesnt mean it was growing you get that in store eggs time to time too. I have several roosters with my hens and sell the eggs I do not hatch ..

It's dark enough to be a pullet, but at 13 weeks a pullet wouldn't have a comb like that, nor legs that thick.

Wow. This was really helpful. I am glad I posted photos! Blackie LOVES to sit in my lap. Here is another photo. I guess we will find him a new home...don't really feel like dealing with fertile eggs and angry neighbors. :(
We will miss blackie THE ROOSTER!

There's nothing to "deal" with with fertile eggs. You just collect them daily, wash them, refrigerate them, and eat them.

I'll go see if I can find a pic of the girls

okay...guess it is just the noise complaint then. It is illegal to have roosters in Dallas city limits. But if he is a rooster he is a quiet one for 13 weeks... now I have my hopes up a little. looking forward to seeing your hen photos MamaMarcy! You are giving me hope!!!!

As has been said, you won't get baby chicks with a rooster in with your hens unless you incubate them or a hen sits them for 21 days and they hatch out !

We have always had roosters in with our hens ( Barred Rocks ) - which means that the majority of the eggs we get are
fertile but that makes zero difference for an eating egg. We also sell BR hatching eggs and often incubate our eggs and
sell the chicks.

Blackie OFFICIALLY crowed many times this morning! :( the answer is confirmed now.
