I picked up a barred rock chick today from cal ranch. My kids favorite chicken was a barred rock so I promised we’d get one. I only got one but now I’m worried it could be a roo, which we cannot keep. Can anyone tell by the spot on its head?

Is it a barred rock and rir mix, or just a barred rock. Mix= roo and pure= hen or roo. If it is pure and you want to double check, pull out it's wing, and send pic. Or do best to tell if wind is perfectly straight it is male. Uneven=female.

If it came from a hatchery, you likely won’t be able to tell from the head spot. If it came from a really good breeder who has worked toward that, you likely will be able to tell based on the head spot.

I’m not sure if I did this right but here’s wing picture

All 3 of my barred rock pullets had white/cream head spots. I was nervous but then found it is common.

Pasty butt is easily removed with warm water on a washcloth, I usually hold the washcloth on the poo to loosen it up, then start gently moving it off. If it’s particularly bad, coconut oil can help it slide off the feathers. If it’s cold in the room, you may need to hold and wrap it in a towel on your lap until it dries off, or some people have tried a hair dryer.

From cal ranch. I believe they got them from Hoovers. But when I asked two different employees if the chicks were pullets they both said they weren’t sure and they think they’re supposed to be 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
Hatcheries vent sex the chicks with really good (but not 100 percent) accuracy. So if the store said it was female there’s a really good chance it’s a female. Head spots and feather length doesn’t work with hatchery chicks but again, if the hatchery thinks she is a girl there’s a really good chance she is. When it is between 6-8 weeks post new photos and someone on here will be able to give you a more definitive answe
