OK, so I think I finally have some of these barred birds straight.

Barred with rose comb is a Dominique
Barred with white legs is Cuckoo Maran

but how do you tell a BR from a Barred Holland?

Hmmm... Barred hollands lay white eggs and barred rocks lay brownish colored eggs.. and i do not know if barred rocks have this or not but the barred hollands have yellow skin as well.
Sorry im not much help!

Barred Hollands do in fact have white earlobes and big floppy combs and tend to be a tad bit on the small side, they also seem to be a more curious and friendlier breed.

thank you. I wasn't able to see the earlobes in any of the pictures. Do they look the same as barred rocks when they are chicks? I got the surprise pullet special from Ideal. I'm assuming I have a barred rock, but I wanted to see if there was the possibility of anything else

It will be very difficult to tell the difference between a Barred Rock and a Barred Holland chick, especially when you only have the one chick. Both would be mostly black with a creamy white headspot and underside and have yellow legs. Another breed whose chicks would look very similar is the Production Black.

Go to Ideal's website www.idealpoultry.com and look up these breeds to find illustrations of the grown birds and the chicks (BHs and PBs are in the "White Egg Layers" section). Also, you can go to www.feathersite.com for photos of each breed.

In the end, I think you'll have to wait until the chick grows out to have any real indication which barred breed it actually is.

Have fun guessing!

Standard bred Barred Hollands have red earlobes, moderately large combs and are only slightly smaller in body size than Rocks with cocks weighing 8 1/2 lbs. and hens 6 1/2.

The bird Al describes sounds more like the Production Black with cocks weighing 6 lbs. and hens 4 1/2.

All that said, depending on what hatchery Al's birds came from, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if what the hatchery called Barred Hollands came looking more like a Production Blacks. Another possible thing is that they switched breeds on you, either purposely just to fill the order if they were low of the breed requested or by mistake. It happens a lot, unfortunately...

thanks, I guess I'll just have to be patient and wait about 6 months, then post her picture

I got a "brown egg layer special" a while back. Afterthey started laying, I had way too many eggs so I gave a bunch of hens away. I had alot of what I thought were barred rocks- so they were the first to go. I used to get lots of really dark brown eggs- now NONE! Guess I had some marans in there-pooey!

Anybody here got pics of a good Delaware rooster and hen? The pics on the web sites are too small for me to get a good look. It's the same with Dominiques and Cuckoo marans. Any one got some good pics of these too?

Darn I didn't mean for this to go here, sorry I mean't it for a seperate post.
