Can anyone tell me a few differences between the two? I have 2 hens I bought as barred rocks, now they have started laying their eggs are a beautiful chocolate brown. Comparing to my white Plymouth rocks, their legs and beaks are more gray-white than yellow.

between my two the marans is darker and more blurred looking. On the barred rock the black and white is more evenly patterened...almost like a stripe. The combs are the same. The barred rock lays beige eggs. Here you can see the cuckoo on the left and the barred rock on the right

Forgot to add, that is a Blue Marans beside her, but she has not started laying yet.

That looks like the marans. It has a somewhat blurred effect. Mine will lay fairly dark eggs most of the time but not always. Sometimes they are spotted with the dark brown...but mine is certainly not breeder quality.

Oh I wouldn't think mine are either, even my blue one, just love their disposition and their brown eggs!!

Thank you Whittni, it has been a nice surprise, I have two of them just alike and we thought they were Plymouth Barred Rocks. They have just in last few weeks started laying, and knew they were older than my blue marans, so couldn't figure out where my chocolate eggs were coming from!! But they are for sure coming from these girls, which means I have 3 marans hens. I also have what is supposed to be a cuckoo marans rooster, and he is shaping up to look like a rooster, although I have yet to hear him crow!!

don't know what it is, but it's definitely not a barred rock - not full blooded anyway.
