Barred rock vs cuckoo maran

My CM roos are striped all over...more white than black...the hens are much darker. Your roo looks like a mix to me! Sorry if you were hoping for pure! Terri O

(PS) to the other poster...my Marans all have the feathered legs. They are French Marans. I think the featherless legged ones are English Marans?

Barred Rocks have a more even pattern of white to black. The "Cuckoo" pattern is less so and more mixed up. Hence Cuckoo. Kinda like my brother in law. Mixed up! Both have males that are lighter in color than the female and sexible at birth.

I wish you well,

Rancher

yeah, I was pretty sure the roo was not pure bred judging by earlier comments from a few weeks ago, but yall do think he is a rooster, right??

and yes the white on the far right is most def a roo perhaps he doesn't feel the need to crow surrounded by all those beautiful girls

but I'm sure he will at some point! he looks a mixed breed perhaps crossed with marans? I'm slightly envious your girls are laying lovely dark eggs, I am waiting till next year to get some nice dark eggs layers, I have a black copper marans cockerel that I will cross with a rhode island red and a light sussex to get some.

your roo is likely half cuckoo maran. I see a lot of mixes with a barred hen that come out looking like this. I think he is a nice looking fellow

Thank y'all for the nice comments. I certainly wouldn't try to pass him off as full marans & won't be entering competitions!! I just love my pretty hens and my rooster is so sweet(at least so far!)

True Cuckoo Marans have white legs no feathers though, and the barred Rocks have yellow legs, but some that you get from the hatcheries can have the wrong leg colors one of mine did. So I try not to use the leg color.

I should say my CM don't have feathered legs.

I didn't mean "True Cuckoo Marans" I mean't the statement was true, LOL just forgot the comma.
