Barred Rock vs. Marans

omg my chickens look just like that! Crud. However, My black copper marans have DARK legs, and these girls are lighter. Is there anything else that I can use to distinguish? Like comb? I will download the pics for you Nicole01

Oh yeah, I bet money that's a cukoo maran. My Luna is very calm and sweet. I picked her up at 4 weeks of age last week and she is already tamed.

Cuckoo marans and barred rocks have identical coloring and comb. The only difference is egg and leg color.

The first chicken depicted in this thread is very clearly a cuckoo marans hen. Her feet and legs are definitely not yellow (BR feature), and she is most definitely not barred.

Cuckoo refers to a color pattern that is somewhat similar to barring, but not the same. If she was a BR, she'd have neat stripes of black and white that lined up. This girl does not in the slightest.

Here are the two breeds side by side. The difference in color pattern is night and day, as well as the leg color.

ok, so now I guess I just wait because you guys will have made me super duper happy!!!!!!!!!!1 I regretted the BR's. and really wanted more Marans in my tiny flock. So if I actually hit the jackpot.....woohoo!!!!!!!!!!! (BTW, the lady I bought them from had at least a dozen different pure breds, but ALL the 2 month olds were in one box. I imagine that IF one of her BCM's had thrown some cuckoo's, she would have no idea. She literally had 500 or 600 babies in all!)

My guy bought this hen as a Cuckoo Marans. I wasn't with him and he didn't ask if she was hatchery or breeder. She just started to lay and he is now convinced she is not a Cuckoo Marans because her egg is not dark brown. It is brown and darker than the others...but not much darker. He thinks she is a BR. I don't. I think she is likely a hatchery bird. She is clean legged(white) and has a Rose comb. She does not look barred to me though...it looks cuckoo. I would appreciate any insight.

I had to run out and look at her legs...they are light yellow with dark markings on the fronts. I guess they just came out looking white in the photos. Ok then...Dominique it is! Funny all the times I have posted pictures of her, nobody has said differently =)
