My barred rock hen, Sherman has a smaller and lighter comb. It could be because if the cold as here in Ohio it’s Been in the 30’s all week but my RIR has a big red comb still. Sherman is molting but coming near the end of her molt. They’ve stopped laying for the winter Here are some pics that I took today. (I took some with my RIR to show you)^^^^^^ (pics top. It’s being weird and not letting me put them where I want to )

And here are pics I’ve taken October where she had a full and darker comb

Usually, birds in production will have larger red combs and those out of production will pale and shrink.
However, I had an orpington that always laid well but who's comb never grew or got red.
I now have an older hen that stopped laying when all the other older hens did this autumn but she still has a huge bright red comb.

When I meant she is molting I meant Sherman. It sounded like I was talking about penny my RIR sorry.
That’s what I was assuming! Thanks for making my assumptions clear! ::D
LOL I think I'm still confused!
Your Barred Rock looks like she is molting, so that is one reason why her comb is pale, dry looking and has shrunk.

Mine do that too. I do have 1-2 birds when they molt, their comb doesn't seem to go that pale or shrink much, each bird is an individual.

What I put in my original message was she was molting right after I was talking about penny. So it sounded like I was saying penny was molting
