Barred Rocks!!

She is too big for a bantam. It is mainly her lack of maturity that has puzzled me more than her size, even though she is much smaller than she should be.

My BR is also a lot smaller than I think she should be. She's active, healthy, and eats well, so I'm not overly concerned, but I did just start a round of Rooster Booster just in case it's worms that are slowing down her growth.

What do you think? Is this girl of mine going to be laying soon? She is 18 weeks and has the reddest face of all my Barred Rock girls. Nobody is laying yet......anxiously awaiting! She is my funniest girl, she takes every opportunity she can to jump on my shoulders, it is impossible to kneel or bend down in my coop without becoming a perch for her.

Have you checked her pelvic bones? Once they're two finger-widths apart , she's close. She'll also start squatting 1-3 weeks from her first egg. Have you seen any of those signs?

I haven't checked her pelvis today, but wow was she acting like she was PMSing, she was making irritated noises and being a bully to everyone close to her, which is not her normal self, like extra antsy or something. Maybe starting to get hormonal? Also almost even redder in the face today and maybe I am imagining it but it seemed like the comb/waddles were also slightly bigger than yesterday.

I have three lovely little Barred Rocks to help me begin my initiation into the Great Chicken Adventure, and while all three are very healthy and active, I noticed that one of the chicks seems to be acquiring its feathers at a much slower pace than the other two. They're all the same age, but two of them are darkly colored and speckled and have tail feathers, while the third is a lighter grey color, still quite "fluffy" looking, and has the barely perceptible beginning of tail feathers. Any suggestions as to why this one may developing so slowly? It's just as big as the other two, but just seems to be maturing more slowly.

Roosters develop their feathors more slowly than hens normally, so that could mean it is a rooster!!
