Barred rooster over NH red hens

What do you get when you cross a barred rock rooster with NH red hens? I thought it would create a Delaware. After all, that is how the Delaware breed came about, isn't it?
And, would this BR Roo/ NH red mix be sex-linked like it is in the reverse?

Go easy on me, I'm not a scientist and this genetics thing really makes me crazy!!

nope and nope

if you took lots of time and generations and generations of birds you may be able to recreate a delaware but a single crossing would produce all black chicks only. they would not be sex-linked either. sex-links are produced by mating a rooster with the gold gene (like an NH or RIR) to a barred or cuckoo hen or one with the silver gene like a barred rock.

No on the sex links, it's a one way deal meaning the hen has to be barred and the roo solid or nonbarred. You'll get barred or partially barred chicks who should be good dual purpose birds.

Recreating the Delaware is a very involved process that takes hatching hundreds of chicks in several crosses upon crosses (oversimplification there-kathyinmo is doing it right now if you follow her project).

So you (and the post above) are saying that all chicks that hatch will have some barring or b all barred...the reply at top says black.. But most likely have some barring.. Well ok... Good dual purpose is a good thing...

Yes, barred roosters will pass barring to some degree to all chicks. Have hatched many BR over Buff Orp, over Ameraucana, etc. All are barred, some less, some more, but every one had barring, no solid colored chicks from that sire.

Six months ago, this same situation came up on another thread. Boy! Did I get in hot water. Someone said they had a BR rooster and were going to put them over NH hens and make "Delaware" chicks for meatier birds. When I suggested that would not produce a Delaware, the responses were rather heated because, after all, someone had remembered reading it.

So many people forget that the Delaware was bred by George Ellis who was a hatchery man, and who knows what he was really doing for sure. His sport, "Goliath" was likely the "father" of the Delaware, but who knows for absolute certain.

What is for certain is that the breed is a New Hampshire. (no red) I noticed the OP did not capitalize it. That's fine.

We also have put BR over red hens and they are barred and they are mostly black, but there is also sometimes leaking of red in the usual places. Leaking red isn't unusual for other reasons as well.

I had 5 Delaware chicks mating a Barred roo with a New Hampshire Red,So yes you do get Delawares,

That is a barred Rock roo? Looks like he may be crossed with something? Just having offspring come out the right color does not make them Delawares. You would be interested in reading about Kathyinmo's experiences if you are interested in breeding Delawares.

As far as I know he was sold to me as a barred rock,typical black with white spot on his head.All I know is what I got and what I hatched and they look like Delawares,could be wrong.I don't really care either way,I love my chicks.They are special regardless.Elvis when he was a baby.
