Barred silkie

Barred/Cuckoo silkies can be made with Barred Rock, standard, or Bantam, doesn't matter.

1st F1 crossing, Male Barred Rock X Black Silkie = 100% Barred Offspring

F1 Barred Rock/Silkie X F1 Barred Rock Silkie = F2 cross. 100% Barred Offspring, 50% Silkied, 50% Smooth, 25% Black skinned, 25% White Skinned

(Not great at percentages, correct me if I'm wrong)

F2 Male X Black Silkie Female = 100% Barred, Silkied, Black Skinned offspring.
From here, you can select the best for breeding, & breed to get better offspring, pattern, etc.
do we still use punnet squares to figure out these things? like the percentages? I remember in 7th grade doing the Punnets with the traits but heard years later they threw them out?

Barred birds
This makes stabilizing a line with all of the defining silkie traits less important, and allows us to focus on three main features; crests, silkied feathers, and barring.

If we do what @JacinLarkwell suggested and use bantam cochins we do not need to worry about foot feathering (though I’m unsure if that is something that is important to you, bantam cochins also just are nice and fluffy, also a similar size.)

Personally I would start with a barred bantam cochin cock over black silkie hen, (you should get chicks with 100% crests and barring, they will all also carry the silkie feather gene.)

Then you will cross the F1s together, giving you these possibilities:

If we break this down we have ~14.1% barred, crested, and silkied birds.

Of these birds, 66% are male. The other 33% are female. If you want double barred males and single barred females (all birds pure for barring) of these 14.1% you will only use 66%,

4.7% of your total hatch will be double barred, silkie feathered, crested males,

4.7% will be barred, silkied, and crested females,

And another 4.7% will be single barred, silkie feathered, crested males.

You didn’t specify above, but I assumed crest would be important to you due to it’s significance in the silkie breed, but if it not something that is important to you, and you are only looking for silkie feathering and barring, then if I counted correctly then ~18.8% will be silkied and barred.
