Barred Silkies

You might be surprised by what people will pay. Check out the current auctions on eggbid or one of the other auction sites and then decide. There are also (I hear) plenty of swaps in that part of the country--would that be an option? Or would a feed store take him to re-sell?

he went to a swap with me in October and I still came home with him and his brother, and they were free

I just can't afford the gas to take all my roos just to come home with them.....the closest swap right now is in NH

I am breeding them at the moment... been a long project, using black cochin, standard barred rock and silkies....

Like sonoran silkie said, the black skin is the hardest to get back.

I thought you knew what a barred silkie was since you were looking for some???

You "might" have to use exhibition Barred Rocks, since their coloring is what is considered "barring". Dominiques is another option, but the barring won't be as distinct.

Edited for punctuation...it made me angry...

Quail im not sure either. I have a byc page made about this project i started if you have a SMALL barred rock rooster please pm me. I decided after i get the Barred Silkies done ill try to but barring into other breeds.

Cuckoo isn't random, but it has less defined separation between the bars of white and black. Imagine the difference between drawing black lines with a marker versus with a crayon (using minimal pressure). A good photo with two quality birds side by side would really help.

BTW, I'm pretty sure that the cuckoo silkies I occasionally hatch get their barring from a barred rock, so I suppose they are barred and not cuckoo, but since the difference would not show on silkie feathers I don;t think the name difference means much here.

People don't usually pay much for birds with an undeveloped variety (notice I did not say unrecognised). as compared with birds where the quality has been worked on and improved. If you're willing to work on the generations it would take to achieve quality birds with quality plumage you could make as much as with any other variety of equal quality.

If you just want a quick buck, best to work with already perfected varieties.
