Hello! I hatched a little cockerel 3, maybe 3.5 months ago. He's super, super pretty! I noticed today he's got some barring in his splash? Or maybe it's weird feather coloring since he's getting rid of teenager feathers for adult feathers?

Grandpa and Grandma were
Olive Egger, blue and silver barred x Brahma, blue splash

Dad and mom are
Blue Copper Marans x half brahma/OE mix, Splash presenting

So barring is definitely in his background.

He's a beautiful bird and right now he's very leggy, but he's sturdy. I picked him up for those pictures and he's definitely weighty. His sister (not sure if full or half tbh) is to the left of him. I love the blue gradient to her feathers.

She doesn't appear to have any barring.

What're yalls thoughts??

It does look like he has barring in there. Dilutions of black plumage like with the blue gene tend to make barring harder to see in the plumage, and this is even more so the case if it's single-factor barring as would be the result of a mix where only one parent is barred. This may be why not all of his feathers are as obviously barred. Barring is a sexlinked gene, so hens can only pass it to their sons, never their daughters, which explains why he would be barred and not his sister, even if she were his full sister. That's assuming I read your post right and this bird's father is a Blue Copper Marans and mother is a splash OE mix, of course.

He is a handsome guy! What a set of legs on him! 🤭

I don't know enough on the genetics side of it. But they're both very pretty.

Need more pics of the pullet, please. 🙂

The one next to her is supposed to be a Cuckoo Marans from Atwoods. I love her heavily feathered feet đź’“ Her and her brother are both heavily feathered and so leggy.

This makes sense! And yes, you read the post right.

Here's Dad

And their Olive Egger mix momma

I don't have a photo of her dad anymore, unless it's somewhere on BYC.

It's been almost a month since I made this post and he's still handsome. 🥰 he's developed a couple of barred feathers in his saddle feathers.

I also see some red leakage on his wings. His grandmother has a couple of spots on her wings, too, so I'm assuming under all the white is red?

He's still leggy but he's filling out really well imho!! Hatch date was March 2, 2024, so just a few days over 4 months old.
