Crowing
Splash barred. All of my splash chickens have started blue, feathered in blue as chicks, then gradually became lighter with each new set of feathers until they were fully splash colored as adults.

He could be splash barred, or barred blue silver columbian (not perfectly patterned). Or he could be blue barred with a lot of silver leakage. Though less likely due to the possible parents, mottling and barring could also be a possibility.Hello! I've got an interesting 11 month old Rooster that started off speckled dark gray, and has gradually gotten whiter and whiter as he's grown. He is a barnyard mix, so I know there's no SOP to compare him to, but I can't seem to find anything quite like him. I have photos of him as he's grown, with a few flock mates specifically labeled for color comparison.
I know he has at least one copy of splash and at least one copy of barring, that much is obvious. I want to know what do you think? Two copies of splash? Two copies of barring? Vitiligo? Something else? Lay down your experience and opinions, as well as examples for comparison if you have them!

This spring, either when somebody goes broody or I get an incubator, I'll be crossing him with a couple of solid black hens to sort out his barred/blue zygosities once and for all, as well as to see what kind of egg color genes he's got. It's fun to speculate in the meantime, though. Thank you in advance!![]()
I was just playing on the https://www.kippenjungle.nl/chickencalculator.html breeding/plumage site and using my young BCM X CCL hybrid cockerel, then digitally crossed him with my blue & gold barred Easter Egger pullet (not laying yet) and in 2 generations with 128 "breed pairs" I could get one "splash patterned gold duckwing barred (DF) rooster"! I searched that description, and your young cockerel, definitely barred, came up! So lots of barring involved, and Blue is dose dependent, so none is a black bird, 1 is blue & 2 (homozygous) makes splash. Your boy has BlBl. Can't tell if hetero or homozygous for barring. Girls can only be "hemi" zygous barred, making them powerhouses for sex-linked chicks as all the barring goes only to their sons. The flock that my chicks came from consisted of Marans (Black Copper, Wheaten, and Birchen), easter eggers, Crested Cream Legbars, olive eggers, California Whites, Wyandottes (I don't know what color varieties), and I know the "big boss" rooster was a Blue Ameraucana. The lady also had Silkies but I avoided them, they aren't really my type. Nobody with mottling as far as I know. He's puzzled me from day one!
Edit to add: His name is Monet, can you guess why?![]()
