A raccoon took a hunk out of one of my hens last night before I ran him off. It's up above her wing, around her (neck?) area. She won't let me get close enough to her to really check it out. She's running around OK but I threw some bread towards her and she's not eating.

I can't catch her until tonight when she starts roosting without a lot of trauma. Should I catch her and doctor her or just wait and watch? I don't want her to be in pain but the vets around here would charge me hundreds to treat a wound and I just can't afford it.

Any thoughts on anything I can do for her?

Thanks!!

I have an injured hen right now, too, hang in there! I would definitely try to isolate her. Can you use corn to catch her? What I did was use a large dog crate to bring her inside. It's important to keep her away from other hens, especially when she is bloody, because they will peck at her. Clean out the wound and put some bacitracin on it. Good luck!
