Basic Turkey info needed

you should be OK for a very short time.. as long as the bedding stays good and dry the turkey will be OK for the most part..

dampness and the right temps are the main cause to allow cocci incubate..

I've never used med-feed with turkeys and have never had a cocci problem. I've raised turkeys for over 4+ years. This is heritage turkeys not broad-breasted there another story all together

Buck Creek Chickens then you are one of the lucky ones.. it happens and when it does it is a sad site to see if you cant cure them in time.. kills rather quickly to..
Ive never personally had it here because birds are normally started on medicated feed to help build immunity to some degree.. But Ive seen many posts on here with other who have had it, some even had there birds on the medicated feed and still gotten it and had to resort to liquid corrid and Amprolium to cure the birds more or less.

From what i know all birds (poultry anyway) carry it in there systems they just need the right cond for it to show its ugly face and kill.

Medicated feed is the way to go when one can use it, better safe then sorry..

We've had a lone turkey for nearly a year now. She's a Blue Slate, and is now setting on eggs we found for her here on the boards. She should have poults next Monday if all goes well.

We don't use medicated feed at all. Ever. We bed on 2 inches of wood chips, but the first few days we cover these with cheap paper towels. We put a little Apple Cider Vinegar in the water with a few vitamins for our poults (we have a batch of babies we bought a week or so ago).

There was just a posting on one of the big commercial poultry sites about using powdered green tea in the feed instead of medications, (this research was not done in the US, natch )

but this was for chix - not sure why it wouldn't work for turkeys.

If the ducks are in with the poults, they will keep things awfully damp - is it possible to separate the ducks? We've raised turkeys and chix together without issues for years - even those dumber than dumb WBBs before we started with heritage breeds. Never have had a problem. But we always separated the ducks when they were small.

I raised a buff orpington chick with my 5 BBB babies and now the chicken thinks its a turkey! They have been outside now for a while and they are all bffs and you never see the chicken with the other chickens. It always follows the turkeys. Kinda funny.

Really, all apple cider vinegar does is keep the gut in good motions, its used as a preventive..will it work?? more than likely not..have i given my birds vinegar, yes however only for gut flora reasons..

science hasn't proven it to work apple vinegar or green tea or even copper sulfate & cayenne pepper for(blackhead disease). if it did, i haven't seen any documention about it stopping the onset of cocci or other..

If you have wet/damp bedding now in the brooder or in the full grow out stage and flight pens and the birds haven't built an immunity to cocci you surely could get it in your birds,..we always keep liquid drugs on hand just incase of an onset of cocci, ya just never know

time will tell..

here in the north east runs/flight pens are muddy to max and i know my birds have built immunity to cocci so no worries here on the funny farm....

raising birds on wire is probably the only way to get around it and then that isn't always full proof..contamantion by us humans can and does bring the onset on as well.

Good prevention

I have 2 broody ducks sitting now so if you want anymore ducks in say 20 days let me know. I also hatched out 5 this week myself from shipped eggs + the 9 ducks I already have!! I think I may need to downsize the duck population soon
